photoKitakyushu City, literally meaning "North Kyushu," is Kyushu's nearest city to Japan's major island of Honshu. In the Edo Period, the Kokura area of Kitakyushu thrived as a castle town, and with that a splendid castle still serving as a symbol of the area, Kokura promises to continue its development at a rapid pace. Kokura Station, Japan's first multifunctional transport facility, serves both as JR Kyushu's largest train station and as a stop on Kitakyushu's elevated monorail system. Traveling south from the station, a long series of exciting sights both new and old cluster together. New large-scale developments have become common in recent years.
Take a trip to Mojiko Port not far away, and get lost in an entirely different atmosphere of old-style architecture with its retro seaside boardwalk. Mojiko Port opened in 1889 for special exports, ushering in a prosperous era of commerce, with Moji Station (now Mojiko Station) acquiring a richly-rewarded role as the gateway to Kyushu. Many of the buildings from that era have been preserved to this day, and the Mojiko Port Retro Area has been gaining popularity thanks to its beautiful waterfront and nostalgic surroundings.

Mojiko Port Retro Area (Moji Ward)
Mojiko Port Retro Area
From Kyushu's far northern tip extends Kanmon Bridge, linking Kyushu to Honshu, standing 61 meters (200 feet) and measuring 1068 meters (3503 feet) in length. From the Mekari Park observation platform on the Kyushu side, you can see boats going under Kanmon Bridge and through the strait.
Head towards Mojiko Station, and the Mojiko Port Retro Area, with its distincitive old-time feeling, opens before you. In the early 20th Century, international trade brought to the area a high level of culture and a feeling of modernity. Many buildings from the era have preserved their appearances, including the wood Mojiko Station building that was the first railway station in Japan to be officially designated as a cultural heritage site. The area abounds with places to visit, including the Kyushu Railway History Museum, which allows visitors to experience the history and magic of Japan's railroads, and the Kaikyo Dramaship, where guests can learn about the history, culture and science of the Moji Strait. Mojiko offers its visitors a great opportunity to relax by enjoying the sights and sounds of a seaside town. Plus, the area's famous fugu (blowfish) is the perfect treat at the end of a long day of sightseeing.
